Holiday Home Safety Checklist

The holidays: a time for family, food and warm celebrations. You want it to be as safe and joyful as possible for everyone, right? Here are some tips for making sure the holiday cheer doesn’t create danger in your home.

TREE

  • If you purchase an artificial tree, check that it has a fire-resistant label.
  • If you purchase a real tree, check that it is fresh – dry trees are a fire hazard.
  • Set up the tree away from radiators and fireplaces, and in a place where it does not get in the way of traffic.
  • Keep the tree stand filled with water.

LIGHTS

  • Check lights, even if they are new, for frayed wires, loose connections or broken sockets.
  • Do not use electric lights on a metallic tree; it can cause electrocution.
  • If your lights have lead in bulb sockets, keep them away from children who may put them in their mouths. Wash your hands after handling them.
  • Make sure lights you plan to hang outdoors are certified to be used outside.
  • Turn all lights off when you leave the house.

DECORATIONS

  • Use only flame-resistant decorations on your tree.
  • Never use lighted candles near your tree, wreaths or other such decorations.
  • If you have small children, avoid decorations that have small removable parts, sharp corners or come apart easily.
  • Keep wrapping papers, bows and other gift wraps away from the fireplace and tree areas.
